Why LGBTQ+?

I am comfortable working with clients from diverse backgrounds, and I equally support people from within and outside the LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans & Queer+) community. We have come a long way with equalities but for me, LGBTQ+ people still need support with what life throws at them.

Stonewall, the UK’s leading charity for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans equality put out research in 2018 which showed alarming levels of poor mental health amongst the LGBTQ+ community, compared to the rest of the population. The findings included that 52% of LGBTQ+ people experienced depression; they also continue to face widespread discrimination in healthcare settings.

Here in Scotland, I was a delegate at LGBT Health & Wellbeing’s National Conversation on Mental Health in 2019, which explored where the health profession is falling short when it comes to supporting LGBTQ+ people - you can read my views on this topic in Psychreg. 

With this in mind, and with my experience as a gay male in his mid-life who came out in the 1990's, I am passionate about the role that coaching can play to support all LGBTQ+ people to live the lives they want to.

Through my coaching work, I can provide you with a safe place for conversations, without judgement. I pride myself in being down-to-earth in my approach to coaching, and in making sure clients get value from the process.

Also, coaching doesn’t have to focus on your LGBTQ+ identity or poor mental health. In fact, many of my clients come to me to speak about other aspects of their lives – career, setting up a business, self-worth and confidence building – rather than what shapes their identity.

I am also a member of the Gay Coaches Alliance, who are a global group committed to improving development and learning within the coaching profession.

It’s important for me to work honestly and ethically, and coaching should not be seen as a direct alternative to therapy. You can see a therapist at the same time as you see a coach.
